When playing from sheet music or a lead sheet where you only have the chord symbol....
How do you determine the voicing and which notes to include or omit for the chord? |

| I'd say the voicing, and indeed what notes you decide to include or not, are completely up to you. It's your opportunity to inject the tune with your own style and personality. It may seem a like quite an array of decisions to make, but just try playing the song the first time through with a voicing style you're comfortable with, and maybe just stick to playing the basic chords. Then you can try adding different extensions and alterations, to see how they fit with the melody, as well as trying new voicings, or even a mixture of voicings. Learning how to play just one song with a variety of voicings, extensions and alterations will help you endlessly when approaching other tunes. |

If you know the song, play the chords and sing the song as you're playing the chord. Try to match the melody w/the chords.
Then, when you figure out the melody, harmonize the melody using the harmonization method Jermaine teaches in his GK 101 DVD and his 300 pg book. If you don't know the technique, check out his June 2006 newletter, he teaches the principle there.
June 2006 Newsletter:
http://www.hearandplay.com/newsletters.html
Basically, you harmonize the melody w/the Imaj, IVmaj, Vmaj, and sometimes you harmonize the 2 w/ the IImin chord. You take these chords and use the chords to harmonize the notes in the chords. You invert the chords to have the melody note on top.
For example, in Cmaj scale, you use the following chords to harmonize the notes:
C - Cmaj (1st inversion) E-G-C
D - Dmin (1st inversion) or Gmaj (root) Dmin: F-A-D or Gmaj: G-B-D
E - Cmaj (2nd inversion) G-C-E
F - Fmaj (1st inversion) A-C-F
G - Cmaj (root) C-E-G
A - Fmaj (2nd inversion) C-F-A
B - Gmaj (2nd inversion) D-G-B
C - Cmaj (1st inversion) E-G-C
Use this same technique in every key. The chord notes can also be used to harmonize a choir. It's good to get the 101 DVD b/c it comes w/ an ebook that gives you the harmonization scale in every key. Practice your harmonization scales in every key, at least 2/wk and in 6wks, you'll be able to harmonize and play in every key.
I pray this helps. God bless! |

I have the Gospel Keys 101 video so I know how to harmonize the scale of C but I'll have to figure out the other 11 myself. I'll accept that challenge and get back to you on success/failure. Thanks. |
